Skye Cleary's Open Studio:
But What Do You Think of My Work?

 May 13 – June 3, 2022

Arcade Project Curatorial is pleased to present Skye Cleary's Open Studio: But What Do You Think of My Work? Cleary is an MFA student who supports herself through exotic dancing. She makes paintings that examine the intersections and tensions between these aspects of her life, labor's precarious nature, and the cost of education in the art world. Rather than indebt herself for life with student loans, Cleary has found a way to fund her education, and while the market doesn't compensate her for her artwork, it does for her body. The question "what do you think of my work?" applies equally to both worlds she inhabits: snap moral judgments about the nature of sex work and aesthetic judgments of her paintings are among the many possible responses. Like any artist, she wants her work to stand independently but worries that people might not take her art seriously because of her survival gig and relying upon her looks to make a living. Cleary is opening her studio to the public, exhibiting some new work hoping that she can begin to see the fruits of her artistic labor.

About Arcade Project Curatorial

M Charlene Stevens founded Arcade Project in 2015 as a digital art zine with hopes of moving into print. Working with Roman Kalinovski, she launched a nomadic gallery, Arcade Project Curatorial, during the lockdown period of the early pandemic. The gallery produced online exhibitions, a talk series, and the occasional pop-up show when COVID would allow. In March 2022, Charlene and Roman inaugurated their permanent space in Bushwick with an exhibition of works by Chun Hua Catherine Dong.
