In its first year in New York, Conception Art Fair presents a hopeful image of a more democratic art world. The first art fair owned and produced exclusively by women, Conception aims to present the work of women and minorities under-represented at the larger fairs.

Welcome to Affordable Art Fair weekend in New York City. You’ve probably seen the bright pink banners everywhere alongside ads showing vaguely surprised art collectors with their newly bought artwork.

The 37th edition of The Photography Show, presented by AIPAD (the Association of International Photography Art Dealers) features work from more than 115 galleries from around the world, offering contemporary, modern, and 19th century photographs as well as photo-based art, video, and new media.

Independent New York 2017 is a robust and rousing affair, ranging the art spectrum from sound art and installation art to collage and painting. From Gavin Brown to David Lewis, focus at the fair was on keeping an eye toward the unexpected while remaining relevant to current and upcoming art exhibits. 

While color often seemed to be a stand-in for content at this year’s NADA NY, a few galleries brought interesting and challenging work to the table. Although bright, New York’s fair was not quite as glitzy and sleek as its Miami counterpart in December, with only a few splashes of resin and glitter. 

There are a few reasons not to skip Pier 92 this year. Levi van Veluw’s solo presentation The Monolith at Galerie Ron Mandos (Amsterdam) and Patricia Cronin’s Tack Room and Frances Goodman’s acrylic nail sculptures at SMAC (Cape Town, Stellenbosch) are not to be missed.
